LGBTQ Resource Center provides comfort, shopping experience for students

The LGBTQ Resource Center offers students an open space to socialize, study and choose from an unlimited amount of clothing from its Clothing Closet at no charge.

According to Owl Life, the Clothing Closet was created to provide a more comfortable and accessible way for transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming students to shop for clothing that fits their stylistic needs.

The Clothing Closet is located on the second floor of the Carmichael student center on the Kennesaw campus in room 253. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Friday.

The resource center has been providing for the needs of LGBTQ+ students for 10 years.

“The closet started as a pop-up shop for transgendernon-binary and non-conforming students,” LGBTQ Resource Center coordinator Mandy Gills said. “In November 2021, Mama Bears helped make the closet permanent for any students to shop whenever they’d like.”

According to its website, the network named Mama Bears supports, educates and empowers families with LGBTQ+ members and the LGBTQ+ community. They also recognize individuals and institutions that work for the equality, inclusion and protection of LGBTQ+ people.

During October, the resource center celebrates LGBTQ+ History Month

According to National Today, LGBTQ+ History Month is a celebration of the diverse and beautiful lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and a reminder of the importance of gay rights.

Each year LGBTQ+ History Month evolves into a national collaborative effort to bring extraordinary figures from the community into the spotlight.

“The Clothing Closet offers new makeup, jewelry and gender-affirming items in addition to other pieces in the closet,” Gills said.

Donations can be made to the Clothing Closet during normal business hours.

The LGBTQ Resource Center hosts weekly and monthly programs for its campus community. According to their website, the center offers a variety of community groups where students are encouraged to participate in as many groups as possible.

The LGBTQ Resource Center will host its Halloween Costume Swap on the Green on Oct. 26 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
