Modeling team tackles national issues in annual fashion show

The Xtreem Modeling Team hosted its third annual fashion show, “Xtreem Season 3,” on Friday, Nov. 11, on the Marietta campus.

“This is our third one since starting this organization, and this is the biggest turnout we have ever had,” said Olivia Saulsby, senior accounting major and XMT president.

The audience members were very interactive throughout the show and scene changes. Graduate student and host Dorian Pentecost invited members of the audience to join him onstage and compete in small contests like walk-offs and rap battles.

“Tonight’s show is going well. They had some interesting scenes,” said Jasmine Pearson, a senior exercise science major. “I would definitely say my favorite part was when they had people from the audience come up to freestyle and dance.”

The concert-style lighting and music for each scene connected to the theme of the scene and the design of the clothing.

The executive board members of XMT chose to theme the event around social media trends. Each scene of the fashion show correlated with what was trending on platforms like Instagram and Twitter.

Scene titles included #BlackLivesMatter, #She’stheBoss, #NowYouSeeMe, #Queen and #Season3.

Senior communication major Kiersten Brydie opened the #BlackLivesMatter scene by reciting a poem about the movement.

“I performed alongside my [sorority] sister DaShon,” Brydie said. “It basically was talking about the police brutality and injustice that has been happening in the black community.”

For this scene, the models wore all black. One portrayed Trayvon Martin, walking with a hoodie and an American flag bandana over his mouth. At the end of the runway, he took out a can of Arizona Tea and Skittles.

“I liked all of the fashion, and I liked seeing my friends walk,” said Imani Adams, a senior criminal justice major. “My favorite part was the beginning with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the Trayvon Martin tribute.”

In the #BallerAlert scene, the models wore different kinds of sports team paraphernalia. The #Queen scene featured only female models who wore extravagant headpieces and beautiful gowns to express the beauty and style of women.

“The #Queen scene was my favorite because I am all about female empowerment,” Brydie said.

The XMT fashion show closed out with the #Season3 scene, where every model in the show walked.

During the show’s intermission, guest artists performed, including traveling poet Cyrusspeaks and musical performers Daywalk and Jaye Newton.
