Holiday weekend brings parade, movies to Cobb

Fourth of July parade and fireworks

(From news releases) – The Marietta Freedom Parade will be held on July 4, starting at 10 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church. The event will include free concerts, museum tours, an arts and crafts show, carnival games, food and a fireworks show that begins at dark.

Cobb County government offices will be closed Monday, July 4, for Independence Day. CobbTV, our county government access channel, will broadcast the parade live and replay it multiple times during the following week. Watch meetings and learn about summer road closures.

Bring family to enjoy fun summer events

Cobb County Library System staff is partnering with other county departments to provide great Summer Reading Program activities for the whole family.

  • Acworth Storytime in the Park, a program of the Acworth Library
    10:30 a.m.-11 a.m., Tuesdays through July 26
  • Frana Brown Park, 4901 North Main Street, Acworth
    Storytime in the Park features stories and movement activities. All ages are invited. Call 770-917-5165 for more information.
  • K-9 Unit Demonstration
    Sgt. Maddox and His K-9 partner will feature a demonstration for school age children at Vinings Library on July 12 at 2 p.m. and Switzer Library on July 21 at 3 p.m.
  • Great Blue Heron: Majestic Bird of the Watershed, presented by the Cobb Water System’s Watershed Stewardship Program. Program for school age children and families will include stories, a Great Blue Heron puppet and cover why protecting watersheds for the largest bird in our area is important. Switzer Library: June 28, 3-4 p.m.; West Cobb Regional Library: July 13, 3:30-4:20 p.m.; Kemp Memorial Library: July 14, 11 a.m.-noon; Acworth Library: July 25, 11 a.m.-noon.
  • On Your Mark…Get Set…ELECT!: Lively hour of games, crafts and presidential trivia presented by Cobb Youth Museum. Limited to children ages 6-10. Made possible by a grant from Cobb EMC, the program covers more than two centuries of U.S. presidential history. Switzer Library: Thursday, June 30, 3 p.m.; Mountain View Regional Library: Wednesday, July 13, 3 p.m.; Vinings Library, Tuesday, July 19, 2 p.m.

Open house at Wright Environmental Education Center

Come and join the fun at Wright Environmental Education Center’s open house 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, July 7. Learn ways to play, build and cultivate in your own backyard. There will be activities, information and a chance to explore the beautiful facility. You can drop by for a quick visit or bring the family and a picnic for lunch. There will be fun for all ages. The education center is located at 2661 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta. Parking is on Post Oak Tritt Road, next to Chestnut Ridge Christian Church. Then walk down the trail to the house. Enjoy free movie screenings at county parks

Sunset at the P.A.R.K.S., the free movie series presented by 104.7 the Fish and Sprint, continues Friday, July 8, with a screening of  “Minions” at Fullers Park. There will also be arts and crafts for children and food trucks. Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Fullers Park is located at 3499 Robinson Road, Marietta.
