Are celebrity opinions valid?

In 2025, it is safe to say that a lot of people are mindless. During this day and age, where the need to analyze and formulate opinions and consume news while factchecking is vital to keep the general public informed.

The news has been flooded with the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict, the civil war in Sudan, the release of the Epstein files and the growing tensions between the United States and Venezuela. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Even with so many reliable and trustworthy news sources reporting on the issues, many people cannot form opinions by themselves.

Instead, they depend on social media and celebrities. People do not fact-check their sources and rely on celebrities to tell them what to think.

Many American celebrities were very outspoken about who they supported during the 2024 presidential election, with Megan the Stallion and Cardi B both speaking at Kamala Harris’s pep rally.

However, this sparked outrage with both Democrats and Republicans.

Furthermore, a new term on the popular social media app TikTok has surfaced called “performative activism.” It is defined as “activism that is done to increase one’s social capital rather than because of one’s devotion to a cause.”

Regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict, people have turned on each other and have ostracized other people who do not support the cause of “Free Palestine” or for supporting Israel. Individuals have also pushed this agenda towards celebrities.

On the other hand, many celebrities support the Free Palestine movement and are not afraid to show which side they are on. Concerning this, celebrities should have a political opinion because they can use their fame to assist around the world.

However, even though many famous people use their status for wealth, a lot more are being compensated for their political endorsements and also their content.

For example, in the recent 2025 New York Mayoral Race, the front-runners were Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo. The candidates for these elections, just like many others, had been endorsed by many celebrities, including actors Lupita Nyong’o, Mark Ruffalo and Bowen Yang in favor of Mamdani.

On Cuomo’s side, the celebrities were Marc Anthony and Woody Allen. Although the results of the election could not have just been based on these endorsements themselves.

Celebrities should not be controlled by people into believing in what the general public should believe in. They should be allowed to openly speak and criticize whatever issue they want.

However, people should not solely rely on celebrity opinion. Celebrities are good for fashion, entertainment, and music, not politics.

This is why people should stop for a moment and start thinking for themselves. They should think about how they truly feel and apply that to themselves, without caring about what anyone else thinks.
