Yik Yak becomes KSU phenomenon

Chardae Sanders, Staff Writer

Since we last caught up with the popular free hyper local social app, Yik Yak, there have been new features added including the real-time feature, Peek Anywhere. In addition to the new features, Yik Yak has become a choice app for anonymity and increased in popularity within the last year.

Co-founded by CEO Tyler Brooks and COO Brooks Buffington in late 2013, Yik Yak focuses on collegiate users who like to share their thoughts within their local communities through anonymous unfiltered post or comments.

Yik Yak gave the Sentinel an update on the app’s increased popularity within the collegiate setting.

The Sentinel: Can you give me an update on Yik Yak’s popularity?

Yik Yak: When Yik Yak started, the goal was to create a new forum of like-minded people regardless of pre-existing relationships. Today, Yik Yak is in more than 1,500 college campuses in the US, and Yik Yak is always looking for more opportunities to build out the app and make it useful and fun for social communities. The company has launched new features like Peek Anywhere, and continues to develop the technology to give users the best experience possible.

The Sentinel: Is there a surge in popularity on the KSU campus specifically?

Yik Yak: KSU, like many colleges, is a great place for Yik Yak because it features a high density of people going through similar experiences in one area. Students at KSU use Yik Yak to communicate about what’s happening on campus, to make jokes or to share their thoughts around finals or a campus event. The hyper-local aspect of the app makes it easy for students to communicate with one another on campus and it’s a trend we’ve seen across other campuses in the US.

The Sentinel: What are the specifics of the Peek Anywhere feature?

Yik Yak: Yik Yak recently redesigned the technology to make it more user-friendly and encourage positive interactions with the addition of the Peek Anywhere feature. This feature fulfills a higher purpose of delivering unabridged news in real-time to any user in any area in the country. This will allow users to witness and experience important and / or entertaining global events, such as the Super Bowl or Presidential Inauguration through Yik Yak. It also acts as a real-time news source that allows users to peek into conversations within a specific area.

The Sentinel: Just a refresher for new Sentinel readers, what makes Yik Yak different from other messaging apps?

Yik Yak: Unlike many anonymous apps or other social networks on the market, the location is what makes Yik Yak unique. Yik Yak is the social messaging app for hyper-local engagement, allowing users to interact with anyone in their area. Whether it’s sharing breaking news to a wide, targeted audience or simply meeting new people and publicizing an event, users are finding new ways to leverage Yik Yak in a positive way.
