Best of The Sentinel: Favorite Music

Anna Shoup – Arts & Living Editor

I have been loving chill and uplifting indie music recently, but specifically “Pink Sky” and “In Water” by Bay Ledges (really the entire album “Ritual”), “How I Love” by King Tuff, “It’s All in Ur Head Man” by Honeywhip and “Alone in the Mountains” by Goth Babe. These tunes have been mixed in with angsty ones like “90s American Superstar” by Wallice, “Hybrid” by Annie Dirusso, “The Other Way” by Michigander and “Phones” by Malcolm Todd.

While my favorite artist over the past year has been Taylor Swift, my favorite album would be Stick Season by Noah Kahan. I think it’s a great post-quarantine album that perfectly describes what it’s like to live in your hometown as an adult. My two favorite songs on the album are “Homesick” and “The View Between Villages.”

2022-2023 was the year of Taylor Swift. Rerelease or dropping a new album from thin air, that woman has the music world on lock. Otherwise, the albums ‘the record’ by boygenius and ‘Drop Cherries’ by Billie Marten have been on a constant loop too. I have a tendency to stick to familiar music, so I was more than likely listening to the La La Land or Minecraft soundtracks on any given day this academic year.

My favorite music released this past year is Caamp’s new album “Lavender Days.” I have it on CD and play it in my car every week since its release. It is a perfect Spring and Summer album and I can’t get enough of it.

The best album that has come out since we’ve started the school year to me is undoubtedly SOS by SZA. The album came out early December 2022 and to this very day I still have it in my normal rotation like it just came out. The album is easily one of the best albums listened to in a long time. Sza’s sophomore album was very long awaited, and she did not disappoint as she proved to be more than a one-dimensional artist. Sza takes us through a journey sonically, exploring multiple genres within the album. In my opinion, SOS has very few skippable songs. In fact, I’ve listened to the entire album multiple times since its release.

My favorite artist is Taylor Swift; I am one of the biggest Taylor Swift fans you’ll ever meet! Last October she released her new album Midnights, and I absolutely love it! My favorite song from the original 13 tracks is You’re On Your Own, Kid, and my favorite song from the 3am tracks is The Great War. Other than Taylor Swift, one of my favorite books is Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and they recently came out with a TV show based off of it, and I absolutely love their album Aurora. My favorite song is Look At Us Now (Honeycomb).

My favorite music from this year is the album Caprisongs by FKA twigs and the EP Monologues by Ogi. FKA twigs hasn’t missed on an album yet, and Ogi is a newer artist that I got to see open for Mahalia this year and she put on a great show. If you’re into alternative-style R&B (you won’t get any classic love ballads here) I highly recommend these records. Another alt-R&B recommendation is Brent Faiyaz’s record WASTELAND. There are a couple less than great songs, but overall he shows the same level of talent he has on his previous albums. I can’t wait to see him headline at Sol Blume festival this summer with my sister.

My favorite album to come out this year is Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti. I’ve recently started listening to more of Bad Bunny’s music and this album has some of his best work so far. I frequently play songs from it in the car or when I just want to listen to chill and listen to music.

I am a huge country music lover, and there has been no shortage of new releases over the past year. I have grown into a Larry Fleet super-fan recently and have now seen him live in concert twice this year. Songs like “Layaway” and “Quittin’ Ain’t Workin’” have been on repeat on my daily drives. I have also been loving music from other up-and-coming country artists like Megan Moroney, Cody Johnson, and HARDY. I’m looking forward to lots of country concerts this summer!

I have a large range when it comes to my music taste and favorite artists. Some go-to artists I gravitated to this past year were Zoe Wees, John Legend, Madison Beer and Rihanna. I’m a Christian, so worship music has always meant a lot to me. My favorite song that I play all the time is “Nineveh” by Brooke Ligertwood which was released last year.
