OPINION: Students should know the benefits of veganism

Kennesaw State University students should look into becoming vegan in order to prevent animal abuse and acquire a healthier lifestyle.

Author Hemi Kim of “Slaughterhouses: The Harsh Reality of How Meat Is Made” from Sentient Media says the animals that are to be slaughtered are forced to fast and brutally beaten. Kim also says the negative psychological states of these slaughterhouse workers have negative effects.

“People who kill animals in slaughterhouses have been found to have higher self-reported rates of ‘somatization, anxiety, anger, psychological hostility, phobic anxiety and psycho[sis]’ compared to office workers and retail meat-packing workers,” Kim said.

According to an article from Forbes, veganism is piquing many students’ interest because of the “ethical and environmental implications.” As journalists continue investigating the meat industry, the global shock has been immense. The abuse animals endured in mass-produced meat factories has made people want to make the dietary switch. Although the switch can be complicated, studies and first-hand accounts prove that it is worth it.

An article from Rush University Medical Center says veganism can aid in preventing heart disease, promoting weight loss, lowering the risk of cancer and managing diabetes. The center also says that people who become vegan can still procure accurate nutrients such as Vitamin D through natural sunlight and oranges, and protein from soy products and chickpeas. As long as people do the appropriate research, becoming a vegan is feasible.

Websites are efficient in providing great sources of information on how to do and start meal planning. According to Get Cracking, meal planning can be defined as “the action of deciding meals in advance using your schedule, preferences, food on hand, seasonal produce, sale items, etc.” Making lists and allowing adequate time blocks for cooking is a popular option for beginners to acclimate themselves to such a big dietary change. Meal plans are widely available nowadays and are steadily increasing in popularity. If someone does not feel like planning themselves, online resources can easily help them get started.

A vegan lifestyle can further prevent animal abuse and create healthy habits for people who are motivated to put in the work in order for it to become attainable.
