“Serena” review – Wilkins

Symbolic, ironic, and tragic are all words to describe the film “Serena.” Taking place in North Carolina, the film “Serena” centers around George Pemberton, his new wife Serena, and his timber business following the events of the 1929 stock market crash.

“Serena” was released in 2014 based on the novel of the same name. It stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawerence who play a couple instantly in love after meeting at the beginning of the film. This is one of four films that the duo has starred in together. Others include, “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle,” and the recently released film “Joy.” While their portrayal in these films was nothing short of perfect, the roles displayed in “Serena” were different from what audiences are custom to seeing.

The plot thickens as George and Serena go through lengths to conceal past mistakes and wrongdoings that would hinder the timber business and put their relationship at risk. It is not your ordinary gushy romantic drama, which I liked. It has dark undertones. The acting was convincing as I found myself connected to the story. The end will leave you unsure of how to feel about the characters.

Despite the mixed reviews the film received when it was first released, I have a great appreciation for the movie. “Serena” is well written, thought-provoking and left me wanting to discuss it with others. It is a rare gem that can be found on Netflix if your looking for something interesting to watch.
