An Exclusive Look at “John Carter”

Disney’s latest movie “John Carter”, is based on the Barsoom novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and explores the world of a former Confederate Captain in the Civil War who is transported to Mars, where he must help the inhabitants reach an alliance to save the planet.

In the film, director Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo”, “Toy Story”) brings a new life to the popular novels on the 100th anniversary of the series.

“I’m a huge fan.  I’ve read the books my whole life.  And wanted to see them and I’m probably one of the more rabid fans,” Stanton said.

Stanton and the Walt Disney Company have been working on the movie since 2006, leading to the pressure of making a movie to compare
to the well-known series from the early 1900s.

Stanton expressed that the constant reminder of how big the story is to the fans only encouraged his determination and passion in the film.

“Does it feel like when you watch the movie what it felt like to read the book, that’s to me the goal,” Stanton said.

The main character, John Carter, is put through many obstacles that actor, Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights”, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), went through himself to prepare for the role.

Kitsch said this role was different from his prior work in TV and film.

“I think that, you can really take your time and break it down a lot
more,” Kitsch said.

Kitsch said he tried to show the depth to his character by using the material to his advantage. The script allowed him to play John Carter in a way that he said hopes we can all identify with in some way.

“Hopefully I keep throwing you guys curve balls really, and so you can’t know what I’m going to do next.  That’s, that’s the joy of it all,” Kitsch said.

If you are looking for a new film that is sure to showcase the best aspects of older science-fiction movies, “John Carter” might be exactly what you’ve been craving. It will be in theaters March 9, for those who are interested to see is it lives up to its potential to be the next big science-fiction series.
