With the Georgia general election coming up on Nov. 3, KSU students have their own perspectives on who would be best fit for governor of Georgia.
The candidates for governor are Rick Jackson (R) and Keisha Lance Bottoms (D). Both candidates have different values that resonate differently with KSU students.
“I’m supporting Rick Jackson for governor,” said Jack Lizzo, second year masters student in Public Administration. “I value his background in business and believe those experiences are relevant to the challenges facing our state.”
Jackson’s platform includes freezing property taxes and tuition, create more jobs across the state, provide more resources for law enforcement, strongly enforcing illegal immigration policies and ending DEI policies.
Jackson is the founder and CEO of Jackson Healthcare, a healthcare staffing and services company in Alpharetta. His previous political endeavors include supporting Georgia’s foster care system.
“I voted for Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor because she opposes Trump and has progressive views on healthcare,” said Tanner Peterson, a fourth year Criminal Justice major.
Bottoms aims to lower healthcare costs, make housing more affordable, increase funding for education, increase state support for local law enforcement and restructure the Department of Economic Development.
Bottoms served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022. During her tenure, she created the city’s first LGBTQ+ advisory board and publicly opposed ICE.
Not all students strongly endorse one candidate or the other.
“I don’t think either side is good at all,” said Parker Hargis, fourth year Psychology major. “But I’d be pretty interested in certain policies from both sides being enacted.”
The Sentinel conducted a poll via a Google Form that asked students which candidate they were voting for governor. 32 students responded. 84.4% of these students said they would vote for Bottoms, and 15.6% said they would vote for Rick Jackson.
Georgia general elections are on Nov. 3.
