The Omicron Iota chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. claimed victory and a $500 check at the annual Yard Show held at Kennesaw State University.

Multiple fraternity and sorority organizations from the Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council gathered on Sept. 26 in the Convocation Center. They danced, strolled, chanted and “stepped” in synchronized routines.

The competitors were judged based on creativity, appearance and overall appeal in performances, which took weeks of preparation.

Benjamin Thomas, a junior at KSU, is part of the Omicron Iota chapter that won the competition.

“We actually started practicing back in June for the Yard Show,” said Thomas. “This is something that we knew that we were gonna take very, very seriously.”

This victory marked the first time in KSU’s history that Omicron Iota won the Yard Show. The fraternity walked away with a $500 award to support their organization.

“Our chapter’s never won a step show here at Kennesaw,” said Thomas. “We’re gonna be the ones to do it.”

The Yard Show is only one of the many Greek events that build the campus’ community. Students and KSU alumni alike gathered in the 3,800-seat arena to watch the organizations’ performances and create long-lasting connections with their fellow Owls.

“You can really connect and make friends here,” said KSU student Annie Pham. “It’s a lot of Greek life, so a lot of people who are interested in Greek life, this is a way to show them the Greek activities and if they’re interested.”

The tradition of Yard Shows traces back to the early origins of African American Greek life and holds cultural significance to the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which is comprised of nine historically African American Greek-letter organizations. These are also famously known as the “Divine Nine.”

Today, yard shows are used to showcase and celebrate the values and legacies of these organizations.

Kennesaw State’s Yard Show is hosted annually in late August or September in the Convocation Center. The event is planned and executed by the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

“It’s really fun,” said KSU student Kiara Matthews. “It really showcases that in Greek life there is such a community… just watching everyone interact is really nice to see.”
