Owls Win First Conference USA Game Against Sam Houston State

Soccer came out victorious against Sam Houston 2-1 for their second win of the season at Fifth Third Stadium on Sept. 29.

The Owls scored a season-high two goals in the first half.

“They’re continuing to develop every game so it’s an awesome time for us today,” coach Chris Cahill said“We created some opportunities to get into the final third and talked about it a lot”.

The Owls got off to a strong start with a Tianna Rivera goal assisted by Anabel Orozco giving them a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute .

Sam Houston responded with a goal of their own, tying the score 1-1 in the 26th minute.

Alana Nesbit scored her first goal of the season assisted by Anabel Orozco towards the end of the half, to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

“ It’s great,”Cahill said“She’s been working her butt off. She’s one of our fittest players, she puts in the work and you never hear from her. She does everything right and to see her play in a different position and help us out and be opportunistic with just pressing the goalkeeper and creating an opportunity for herself like that’s great.”

The Owl’s defense held Sam Houston scoreless in the second half to earn the victory.

“We bent, but we didn’t break,” Cahill said. “There was a maximal effort by the back four, back five, and even back six if you include the goalkeeper so, they did a good job in controlling and that’s what conference is like. Can we just compete and win our one-to-one battles? I think they did that more often than not and that helped us win the game.”

The Owl’s matchups in the Conference USA have been nothing short of competitive and intense..

“This is nerve-wracking but this is why it’s fun,” Cahill said. “So that’s what the conference is going to be from here on out so we’re in the thick of it now.”

The Owls improved their record to 2-6-3.

The Owls will traveled to play Western Kentucky on Oct. 3.
