Rob King, the head coach of Kennesaw State’s women’s soccer team from 2002 to 2016, will be inducted into the KSU Hall of Fame on Oct. 7 at 7:45 p.m.
King was the first head coach of the women’s soccer program. Immediately after his arrival from the University of Montevallo in 2002, he helped build KSU’s women’s soccer program from scratch.
King kept high expectations each year. In the first year of the program’s existence, the team had an undefeated season moving forward to win the Peach Belt Conference and NCAA Division II Southeast Region Title.
King also led the Owls to the 2003 Division II National Championship with a record of 25-1. During his 14 years at KSU, he developed an impressive record of 168-80-21.
King was named NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year. He also won the Southwest Regional titles in 2002 and 2003. He helped the Owls achieve promotion to Division I and led them to their first ASUN title in 2006 and the regular season conference title in 2007.
King was always willing to accept challenges by having the team compete with top-level Division I opponents and scheduled meetings with ACC powerhouses Duke and North Carolina.
During the Owls’ first participation in Division I, King successfully steered them to win their very first two NCAA tournament appearance in KSU’s history. King was instrumental in helping bring home the NCAA Division I Women’s College Cup to Kennesaw at the Fifth Third Bank Stadium in 2011. He also served as an assistant athletic director.
In addition to his collegiate work, King has left his legacy on the community. He served Cobb County soccer organizations by conducting youth clinics and assisting in coaching youth teams in the local community. King is currently coaching at Oglethorpe University as of January 2022.
