The Zuckerman Museum of Art will be hosting the opening reception for the Fall Exhibitions Series on Sept. 1 in the Ruth V. Zuckerman Pavilion between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The exhibition series showcases the works of artists from around the globe. Event attendance is at no cost and will be open to Kennesaw State students, staff and guests.
The exhibition series includes the multimedia “Recollections Oscar Muñoz,” the “Gravity of Beauty” series and the updated Project Wall installations.
Oscar Muñoz, a prominent Latin American artist, is an expert in developing nontraditional printmaking techniques. His works were curated by Cynthia Thompson and Vanessa Davidson and will be on display in the Clayton Gallery.
The exhibit features six of Muñoz’s works, all of which are themed around impermanence, memory and erasure, according to co-curator Thompson. All six seminal works were parts of Muñoz’s first retrospective in the United States.
Muñoz’s visual art is deeply rooted in the societal conflict in his hometown in Colombia. Work descriptions are displayed both in English and Spanish translations.
“Muñoz’s works exist between forgetting and remembering; in other words, there is a constant battle between a thing that materializes and then fades away, falls apart,” Davidson said about the installations, “although the images Muñoz creates often change or disappear, they stay transfixed in our minds.”
The Project Wall installation will also include sculptor Ben Butler’s “The Lake” and “Morphology IV.”
“The Gravity of Beauty,” curated solely by Thompson, features the work of ten artists around the nation, including Rona Pondick, Amber Cowan, Shelley Reed, Nadia Hironaka, Matthew Suib and William McDowell. The works explore various mediums and join in the Mortin Gallery to celebrate the lightness and weight of perceived beauty.
Renowned tapestry artist Jon Eric Riis will also be present for an onsite lecture at 7 p.m. following the exhibition’s reception. Riis’s “Young Icarus” installation will be featured on the North Wall of the ZMA pavilion.
The first 30 students in attendance will receive a free gift upon entry. Those interested in attending are able to reserve their spot through a link in Owl Life.
Co-curator Thompson is Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Zuckerman Museum of Art and a KSU Associate Professor of Fine Art. Vanessa Davidson works as Curator of Latin American Art at the Blanton Museum of Art located at The University of Texas at Austin. Their collaboration at the ZMA is the result of years of curation and fine art experience.
The Fall Exhibition Series will be open for viewing until Dec. 10. Christopher Payne’s Asylum series will also join the ZMA’s Fine Arts Gallery between Sept. 13 and Oct. 8. Fall 2022 Capstone exhibits will be debuted from Oct. 12 to Dec. 3 as well. Visit the ZMA’s website for more details on future exhibitionsand series.
