Review: New York Fashion Week 2024

Twice a year, New York holds a fashion week where the biggest names in the industry come out and show off their new collections.

Thom Browne, known for his avant-garde designs, Peter Do, celebrated for minimalist styles and Tommy Hilfiger’s classic American fashion, were among the standout designers at the recent New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

Browne’s homage to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” Do’s minimalist monochromatic looks and Hilfiger’s classic-with-a-twist approach offered diverse perspectives on contemporary fashion.

Here are the highlights from their collections, each reflecting the designer’s unique vision.

Thom Browne

Thom Browne is the founder and head of design for his self-titled label. The brand is based in New York where his debut collection was in 2014.

Browne always has unique shows. In his spring 2023 collection, he had a stunt with some models showing up “late.”

His line from this year’s NYFW references “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. The soundtrack for the line was a reading of the poem with ravens in designs across the line.

There were subtle experimental pieces such as patchwork outerwear and extra belts across the line, including belted skirts and jackets.

Since it was a winter show there is protective covering for the footwear and bags. Some of the looks of the jackets are half off, referencing the New York winters, because people are constantly shedding layers or putting them back on.

Helmut Lang-Peter Do

Peter Do is an alumnus of The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He started working for Celine under Phoebe Philo at the beginning of his career.

Most of his shows draw inspiration from designers like Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester and Helmut Lang, where he was recently appointed as creative director.

In his sophomore collection at Lang, he keeps his minimal style with monochromatic looks. Some pieces seem like bubble wrap, but it is a silk that the designer developed. It is a great throwback to Lang’s spring 1999 collection.

The fashion show truly showcased the fashion house’s signature tailoring style, featuring wearable and thoroughly designed garments created with attention to detail. Many of the suits seen in this line combined masculinity and femininity, allowing either gender to wear the piece.

Do’s first show with Lang had nothing that showed his brand within the line. This show has Do’s name all over it with oversized knits and oversized short suits.

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger is an American clothing brand founded in 1985. The brand tries to maintain a classy American style with a modern twist.

The show presented did not give off anything noticeably unique. It almost felt like a regular catalog. “American Cool” was the theme for the collection and it was entirely on brand.

Hilfiger also presented a range of fabrics branching out like herringbone, corduroy and suede.

Overall, critics claim that New York Fashion Week 2024 was a success as many designers truly showed out.
