The Screenwriters Association improves student writing skills

Kennesaw State hosts several student organizations, one of which is the Screenwriters Association.

According to club president Holden Levey, the club aims to foster screenwriting skills via collaborative activities.

“Our club is a place for the screenwriters of KSU to meet and interact with each other. Together, we do writing activities, writing prompts, read and workshop the scripts our club members write, give fun screenwriting tips and pointers and generally just talk about everything screenwriting,” Levey said. “As President, it is my job to set up and lead meetings, guide us through workshops and coordinate activities for our general body meetings with my fellow officers.”

The club members consider it important to have a place to go meet people who share a common interest, especially a place that can help someone improve a skill like screenwriting. It is also important to have activities to help you build on those skills. According to Levey, the members partake in various activities.

“In our meetings, we do a couple different things. A lot of the time we do small writing prompts to get our members to start writing without having to stress about creating a magnum opus every time they put pen to paper…or rather, fingers to keyboard in our case,” Levey said. “It sounds a little intimidating, but in reality, it is a very relaxed environment and one of the most fun things that we do.”

On their Owl Life, the Screenwriters Association has multiple screenplays in different stages of production, from early drafts to shooting scripts. According to the group, these early screenplays are helpful in learning screenwriting.

“I absolutely believe that reading these early drafts of films is extremely helpful for people to learn screenwriting,” Levey said. “Seeing the script of a movie before it was made provides so much insight into how a professional script should be written.”

When asked what they would say to those looking to join their club but are hesitant to join, Levey suggested they just take a leap of faith.

“I would tell those students to just come try it out,” Levey said. “We are an extremely small but welcoming club and we’d love to meet new writers. Our club members are very supportive and are open to all levels of writing. Our club is all about improvement and working on our craft. We provide a relaxed, safe and collaborative environment for our members to share their work.”

All meetings are announced on their Instagram page, @ksuscreenwriters and meetings are held most Thursdays in the English Building room 231.

The Screenwriters Association is an amazing opportunity for aspiring writers or anyone interested in the medium, with interesting activities to engage its members and opportunities to see examples of industry-standard work.
