The Kennesaw Police Department has charged two men in a racially motivated assault that occurred at the West 22 apartment complex on Jan. 22.
Kole Reasoner, a 20-year-old Nursing major and Gauge Stanley a 20-year-old Management major have been charged with a felony aggravated battery charge and a misdemeanor battery charge according to Kennesaw Police.
The victim, sophomore Jalique Rosemond, says he was attacked by the two men in the parking lot upon exiting his vehicle. Rosemond, a black man, says his attackers used racial slurs during the assault. The incident is not currently classified as a hate crime but is labeled as “racially motivated” by police. Rosemond was treated for injuries at a local hospital.
The attack happened outside the 1000 building at the West 22 apartment complex, which denied comment when contacted by The Sentinel. West 22 is home to much of Kennesaw State’s greek life, prompting the Interfraternity Council to release a statement amidst rumors circulating about fraternity involvement in the attack.
“On behalf of the 13 member organizations within the Interfraternity Council, please know we stand with the Kennesaw State University community as well as our Black and Brown peers in condemning the acts of violence that occurred at West 22,” The statement claims. “As the investigation unfolds please know we will support whatever disciplinary actions that may be brought forth should a member organization within this council be found liable.”
Some reports on social media alleged that members of the Theta XI fraternity were involved in the attack. Theta XI released a statement on their Instagram on Jan. 28 denying that Reasoner and Stanley are part of their fraternity.
Stanley, originally from Chatsworth, Georgia, was previously arrested for affray (fighting) in March 2020 in Murray County. Reasoner, originally from Flowery Branch, Georgia, has no previous arrest record.
Kennesaw Police are still asking for any additional information one may have regarding the incident. If you know something about the attack, please contact the Kennesaw Police Criminal Investigations Division at 770-429-4533 or email at KPD_TIPS@kennesaw-ga.gov
Hello. The two offenders were actually affiliated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at Kennesaw State University. That fraternity has a reputation on campus of being racist as well as numerous members assaulting girls.
