With so many different movies that come out every year, it is tough to figure out what to dedicate time to, so here is a list of five films that are worth checking out.
1. Tár
“Tár” is described as a cancel-culture film, but that takes away from the movie’s depth. The film follows Lydia Tár as she conducts the Berlin orchestra. Cate Blanchett gives a performance that is as multilayered as the character she plays. It would be easy to make Tár a one-dimensional character that audiences are meant to despise, but director Todd Field wrote the character as a complex person and, through subtle ways, shows how she uses and abuses her power to manipulate the people around her. She is shown to be funny and caring in some scenes, and calculating and cruel in others. Overall, “Tár” is an intelligent, multilayered portrait of an artist.

“Speak No Evil” is an intense ride. The film follows a couple that decides to visit a couple of friends they met on vacation and things turn sinister. “Speak No Evil’s” biggest strength is its tension. The movie builds and pushes how uncomfortable it feels through the running time. The scares are intense, and the main couple displays the fear and anxiety the audience is feeling as they watch, making them relatable. In the end, the film unravels, but it doesn’t take away from the first 80 minutes.

“Entergalactic” is a beautiful love story. It follows a man named Jabari and his next-door neighbor Meadow as they fall in love. What changes “Entergalactic” from being a classic romantic comedy is the animation and music. The animation style is gorgeous and creative. To go with it is a soundtrack from Kid Cudi, which adds a lot of ambiance to the movie. On top of the animation and soundtrack is the relationship between Jabari and Meadow, which feels honest and relatable. “Entergalactic” is a charming movie with stunning visuals, a great soundtrack, and a heartfelt romance.

4. Bros
“Bros” is a charming film that revamps the “romcom” genre. The film follows Bobby and Aaron, two emotionally unavailable guys who fall in love. From the sound of it, “Bros” is a typical romantic comedy, but through certain elements, it is elevated. The main reason is the comedy of Billy Eichner. Eichner wrote the film and his comedy is on full display in it. Along with the comedy are some very touching and tender moments. The romance is sweet, and both the main characters have chemistry together. “Bros” is a heartfelt and funny film.

“Don’t Worry Darling” is a pleasant surprise. The film follows a 1950s-esque suburban community when one of the women notices something sinister happening. The film’s biggest strength is its mystery, and it does an excellent job at dropping hints throughout without answering anything. The performances of Chris Pine and Florence Pugh add a lot to the film. Pine does a great job of demonstrating a powerful leader, while Pugh is excellent at portraying the mystery element. The film is inspired by past films, but it changes enough to keep it original.
