OPINION: Students should know benefits of time management in college

Getting yourself organized by creating schedules, practicing time management, and having an organized workspace can help create a positive atmosphere for studying and completing schoolwork.

It should be no secret that college life is demanding, and as students start to settle into their classes and the workload increases, it’s beneficial to discuss the ways in which time management can influence the college experience.

Minimizing Stress

According to a Sutter Health article written by Public Health Education Intern Gergana Mishkova from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, time management in college is a great way to minimize stress, especially during an already hefty semester. Working on assignments in chunks and planning in advance can help decrease the stress and anxiety around multiple time-sensitive assignments. When the assignments start to pile up and the stress slowly creeps in, getting a handle on due dates and working ahead of time can make the workload more manageable. A great hack is to use a calendar to plan out a study schedule for the semester to make better use of time and to hold oneself accountable.

Better Grades

Disclosed in aU.S. News and World Report article written by reporter Josh Moody, time management also makes for better grades. When students attack their workload bit by bit rather than last minute, it allows for students to spend time refining their work. In order for a student to attend tutoring to improve one’s understanding of the class, receive feedback from the professor and fix any errors or find areas of improvement, the student has to have managed their time wisely. When students stop procrastinating and are wiser with their time, it can increase their overall knowledge and understanding, thus leading to the improvement of their grades.

Building Positive Relationships with Professors

If a student is serious about their work, it can pay off in the long run. As stated in a Keystone Bachelor studies article written by education and editorial manager, Alyssa Walker, a student with good time management skills is likely to impress professors. When a professor can easily see that a student is putting in the time for their class, they are more likely to help students with recommendation letters, internships and any beneficial connections.

Enjoying the College Experience

While academics are the main focus in college, it is also important to enjoy other aspects that university life has to offer. A Johns Hopkins article suggests that when a student creates good time management habits, they have more time for social life and to participate in extracurriculars. Having good time management skills allows students to make friends and memories.

Time management plays a critical role in having a positive college experience. Honing in on these skills early in life will ultimately set students up for a great future far beyond their college years.
