OPINION: Students should use spring break to rest

With midterms coming up, students should be looking forward to spring break.

This break will give students a chance to hit pause and come back equipped to finish the semester strong.

Spring break is known to be a week of partying, traveling and enjoying time with friends. In some cases, students may get weeklong co-op internship opportunities or decide to work since classes are not in session. While all of these options are okay, the main focus of the week should be rest.

Resting has different connotations for every student. For some it could mean hanging out with friends, binge-watching a show they missed on television or simply sleeping in.

“Resting can be done by doing a hobby you enjoy, taking a trip, getting in those hours of sleep you have lost or simply taking a self-care day,” Sophomore Media and Entertainment major Talia Dodenhoff said.

It is very important students regain a calm mindset after starting a different set of courses with new professors and constant deadlines.

According to Dr. Messina & Associates, spring break allows for a much-needed mental decompression from a student’s demanding schedule and permits their physical health to improve as well.

Juggling many responsibilities at once can be stressful on both the mind and body. When given time to step back and let loose, it is encouraged for students to take it. The alternative would be risking burnout.

Burnout happens more often than students think. Some students cannot recognize the signs until it is too late.

According to Bestcolleges.com, a college burnout means a long period of dangerous fatigue and dispiritedness that most often ends in a drop in academic standing. Burnouts can be avoided if students relinquish their responsibilities occasionally.

Students should have “resets” to be successful and maintain productivity. While avoiding burnout and catching up on hobbies is important, nothing prepares students to take on a new season like a reset.

Humans get so accustomed to the patterns of routine that one begins to run on autopilot. It is important to recognize that taking a break forces one to step out of the routine.

Rest is a crucial part of what it takes to achieve goals as well as tasks, projects, assignments and the demands of hard work. Without rest, nothing would be done; especially not as accurately and successfully as it could be.

It is fairly easy in today’s narrative to always hustle and recite the infamous “sleep when dead” phrase, but rest is imperative to the human psyche.

Students should take full advantage of the interruption of their school schedule and enjoy the time off.
