How to get the best out of spring break

Whether you planned your spring break adventures weeks in advance or simply plan to wing them, some tips may help you make this spring break the best one yet.

With flight fares rising and hotel prices skyrocketing, if you have not secured a flight or hotel just yet, there is still hope. If this is your first time vacationing with friends, going out of town without your family can be liberating and daunting. Worries of flat tires or unexpected expenses are sure to plague your mind in the coming weeks before your departure. Ironically, the entire point of spring break is to put students’ minds at ease before finals. Here are some pointers to give your brain the break it deserves so you can truly enjoy your time.

Write Down What You Need

Compile a list of everything you need at least two weeks in advance. By preparing early, your mind will be completely at ease by the time the fun begins. This includes everything you need to pack as well as creating a budget for your trip.

Ensure that everything is paid for at least a week in advance. Make sure that you bring an updated passport, emergency travel funds and two forms of identification (i.e driver’s license, military ID or state photo ID). This way, any issues regarding flights, hotels and rental cars can be avoided.

Keep Safety in Mind

Traveling alone can seem exciting but do keep in mind the dangers that come with it. Aim to travel in twos or threes. If you are traveling in an unfamiliar area, always have your location on and make sure to share it with a close friend or relative. Plan safety routes and secure emergency contacts in case of any unwanted contingencies. Never over-indulge in alcohol in an unfamiliar place or leave with a stranger.

Consider Local Plans

If you did not make any specific plans for the break, never fear. There are many fun things to do on or around campus. If you are looking to experience the rich culture of another country without the hassle of going through airport security, then try researching restaurants in and around your area that are culturally diverse. Restaurants like Douceur De FranceProvino’s Italian Restaurant or Ferngully Cafe can still give you the intense feeling of wanderlust that people feel while abroad. If you need a distraction, try taking up a pottery or dance hobby for a couple of days.

Spend Time With Friends

Spend the week with friends doing group activities. Spending time with others who are also trying to leave their coursework behind for a few days can bring friends even closer than ever. When you are with the people you love, stress and tension tend to melt away, so consider packing a lunch filled with a wide array of food and going on a picnic with a few friends.
