Owls win against Hatters in straight sets on senior night

Kennesaw State’s Women’s Volleyball team won in straight sets against Stetson on Friday, Nov. 5 with a score of 3-0.

With this win, the Owls remain undefeated at home while also putting up their eighth straight win. This brought their record to 16-8 overall and 10-3 in conference play. This win also ties them up for second place in their division.

At the start of the game, Kennesaw State recognized their four seniors on the team, Bri Becerra, Lauren Chastang, Jessie Cohen and Katie Crocker.

“I’m even more proud of the four seniors that we honored tonight,” head coach Keith Schunzel said. “These four women have given their heart and soul to this program and this university and I’m so dang proud of who they all have become on and off the court. I have so much love and respect for those four.”

Stetson did not make it an easy last set with both teams battling back and forth trying to win the third set. Kennesaw State would win the set 30-28 with the kill shot from Jasmine Brown.

The Owls started out with a win in the first set thanks to Senior Outside Hitter Lauren Chastang who led the team with 9.5 points in the first set and 18 total points during the match. She also led the team with total kills for the game with 14.

Junior Left Side Emma Schurfranz came alive after the first set to help Kennesaw prevail over Stetson with 14.5 total points, second on the team, and came one kill short to tie the team lead with 13 total kills.

The Owls capitalized on their serves with a total of 8 aces on the night compared to Stetson’s three total aces.

The Owls defense also came to play with a total of 7 blocks on the night.

Even though the Owls won in three sets, Kennesaw State had to find a way to come back on Stetson in the first and the third set.

“Proud of our group for finding a way to sweep a solid team when we simply weren’t at our sharpest tonight,” Schunzel said, “But we made some key plays late in each set and pulled it out in three.”

After another win against FGCU on Nov. 7, the Owls have won nine straight games. They look to continue their win streak on the final two games of the season, beginning with a trip to North Florida on Nov. 12.
