A new scholarship — the Rizzuto Family Endowed Travel Scholarship — will be introduced by Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture Anthony Rizzuto for Kennesaw State architecture students to study abroad in the 2020-21 academic year.
The scholarship will support students in the College of Architecture and Construction Management for study abroad to experience architecture in the world, Rizzuto said.
“It’s important for architecture students to see architecture not just on a screen but in the real world,” Rizzutto said. “I had been thinking about it for quite a while, my family was supportive of it, and I felt it was the right time to start the scholarship.”
The Rizzuto Family Endowed Travel Scholarship is currently planned to only apply to study abroad for architecture students. Rizzuto is focused on adding funds to the scholarship before trying to establish more, Rizzuto said.
“Scholarships are a transformative gift to each student recipient to support their academic success,” according to the Department of Architecture website. “An endowed scholarship offers a legacy that will endure in perpetuity.”
Rizzuto said that students would benefit from being able to see historical architecture and sustainability efforts relating to historical architecture.
The architecture department is also expected to benefit from the scholarship in the long term due to an expected increase in architecture students participating in study abroad, Rizzuto said.
“Students need to get out of the classroom, especially architecture students,” Rizzuto said. “If you want a real education, you should be taking at least one study abroad during your time at KSU. It’s important to experience other cultures first hand.”
Rizzuto has been with the Department of Architecture for 20 years and has pushed for students to study abroad. He worked to develop study abroad architecture programs within Germany and the Netherlands since before the KSU and Southern Polytechnic State merger in 2015.
