Fun Facts About The Rec Center

Equipment

  • Over 300 pieces of Fitness Equipment including:
  • 44 treadmills, 12 rowing machines, 14 ellipticals, over 100,000 lbs. of free-weights and Selector Circuit equipment for adaptive use.

Previous rec center equipment (for comparison)

  • We had 15 treadmills, 14 ellipticals, 4 upright bikes, 4 recumbent bikes, 2 rowers, 4 steppers and 1 step mill.

Climbing tower

  • 47 feet tall with 14 belay bars, allowing up to 10 climbers at one time and a 15 foot high bouldering wall. The climbing walls weigh approximately 41,000 lbs and traveled 2,461 miles from Oregon to KSU.

 

Activities

  • Over 14 different sports can be played in the building.
  • Over 40 Recreation and Activity Choices are available at any time.

 

Staff

  • The Student Recreation and Activities Center will employ over 120 student staff members. This makes the Department of Sports and Recreation one of the largest student employers on campus.

Sustainability

  • Adhesives and paints are low VOC emitting
  • The Center will use 35% less water than similar types of facilities.
  • The Center has a computerized energy management system to minimize its carbon footprint.
  • Construction trash was recycled.
  • Reclaimed wood from Oak trees removed from the construction site were fashioned into counter tops for all of the Outdoor Adventures sale counters, as well as 15 beautiful pieces of furniture that are placed throughout the facility. The wood was milled to create a natural rustic aesthetic for the Outdoor Adventures Suite.
  • The Climbing Tower material is made from 30% recycled walnut shells.

 

Design and Construction

  • Planning and design work began in September 2010.
  • Students had a formative role in the design process.
  • Construction started April 29, 2013.

 

Facts and Information

  • Construction budget is $38,700,000.
  • Building area is 174,392 square feet on two floors.
    • 47,175 SF of the existing building was renovated.
    • 127,217 SF of new construction was added.
  • On a peak day, 160 construction workers were on-site.
  • 47 Subcontractors and Vendors worked on the Student Recreation and Activities Center.
  • 420 trucks delivered the concrete for construction.
  • The building frame contains 657 tons of steel …more than the weight of 2 Statues of Liberty.
  • There are more than 450,000 bricks and concrete blocks in the Student Recreation and Activities Center.
  • There are 70 different finishes on the project.
  • There is over 400,000 linear feet of wire – that is just over 75 miles.
  • There is approximately 26,500 square feet of glazing on the facility.
  • There are 888 lockers available.
  • The outdoor pool, beach volleyball, basketball and tennis courts cover 2.2 acres.
  • Combined, the indoor and outdoor pools contain 300,000 gallons of water.
