D2L redesign improves visual features, mobile compatibility

Kennesaw State’s University Information Technology Services rolled out “daylight” updates aimed at improving D2L’s visual interface in time for students and faculty to use in the 2018 summer semester.

According to the UITS website, the daylight upgrades did not change D2L’s functionality. D2L still features the same sign-in process, access to course materials and functions as it did in previous semesters.

According to UITS, some of the prominent features of the new visual upgrade include:

  • A responsive interface with improved compatibility for mobile devices
  • Streamlined navigations
  • Tile-based course layouts
  • Interface updates to the quizzes tool

Students can pin or unpin courses from their homepage from the course selector at the top of the page. Once a course is pinned to a student’s homepage, they will be able to see the course and course image. Professors can use custom or stock images to change a course image from their own homepage.

The new redesign of the quizzes tool is meant to make creating quizzes for students easier on professors. According to an instructional video on KSU’s website, “This visual redesign of the quizzes tool enables responsive question editing layouts for true/false, multiple choice, short answer and long answer questions.”

The redesign also allows instructors to easily put together their questions and answers, and they can see what the final question will look like on the side of the screen. When instructors click to create a new quiz, the website gives the option to turn off the new quiz creation interface and gives the instructor an opportunity to provide feedback.

Political science professor Dr. Jeff DeWitt said that, while there has not been much of a change to the website, it is easier to navigate on mobile devices than the “D2L of old.”
