Jonathan Steltzer, a sophomore music education major and the winner of the 2018 KSU Concerto competition, is being highlighted as a soloist in the John Mackey Soprano Sax and Wind concerto.
The ensemble, part of the Symphony Orchestra Strings event, is set to take place Wednesday, March 12, in the Bailey Performing Arts Center in Morgan Hall at 8 p.m.
Steltzer, a soprano saxophone, was one of three finalists and the only wind instrumentalist to win the competition originally held in October 2017. Winners also included Matthew Hodgetts, a clarinet player, and Huijeong Lee, a violinist.
“I wasn’t really that nervous because I felt like I was really prepared,” Steltzer said in regard to his auditioning stages for the competition. “Like, if you ride the same roller coaster ten times, you’re probably not going to be scared the next time.”
Steltzer has an extensive resume that includes performances with the Atlanta Wind Symphony, KSU Wind Ensemble, KSU Jazz Ensemble and Recorder Quartet. Steltzer will compete this spring at the 2018 International Woodwind Duo Symposium held at Sam Houston State University.
