Soccer eliminated in ASUN Semifinals

The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team lost to Lipscomb 1-0 Friday and were eliminated from the ASUN playoffs in the semifinals.

Lipscomb struck early in the 9th minute, scoring what proved to be the deciding goal of the match. Justis Bailey scored a header from a Natalie DuBoise freekick.

KSU had more shots in the first half than Lipscomb, but Lipscomb was more clinical. Lipscomb went on to dominate the second half in terms of shots, outshooting KSU 10-4.

“I am so proud of the fight our team played with tonight and all season long,” said head coach Benji Walton. “Tonight’s game was what playoffs are all about. Two good teams battling like crazy to advance and, unfortunately, we came up on the short end.”

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao and veteran defender Abby Roth were both named to the 2017 ASUN All-Tournament Team.

Roth, Mady Carter, Ashtah Das, Ida Hepsoe and Jessica Sexton all played their final games as Owls on Friday.

“I hate our season had to end for our seniors tonight,” Walton said. “This group has been tremendous and will not only be sorely missed but hard to replace. I will be forever grateful for my short time with them and for the legacy that they are leaving for future Owls.”

The Owls will bid their seniors an emotional farewell as they enter the offseason.

The youthful team, made up of 13 freshmen out of 27 players, gained priceless experience this season and will be looking forward to next season to turn their coming-of-age story into their own success story.
