BOB crash leaves one student injured

A crash on Sept. 13 involving a BOB bus left one student with minor injuries.

At approximately 6 p.m., a Toyota Camry driven by David Crawley of Alpharetta attempted to make an abrupt U-Turn at the intersection of Frey Road and the Skipp Spann Connector. A BOB bus driven by Robert Perera was traveling at about 30 mph through the intersection at the same time and collided with Crawley’s car. The crash displaced 11 bus passengers from their seats.

The injured student, undeclared freshman Jonny Bushong, was sitting in the middle seat at the end of the aisle when the crash occurred. The collision threw him from the seat and sent him directly into a metal pole in the center of the aisle.

Bushong took the majority of the hit to his knee upon connecting with the pole and was taken to the hospital for his injuries. The knee was later X-rayed and cleared of any fracture.

No one else was injured in the crash, which involved 10 other bus passengers and two additional passengers in Crawley’s car.

“It’s always very concerning to learn of an accident involving our students, faculty or staff,” said Maggie White, associate director of transportation. “We place extreme importance on training our Big Owl Bus drivers to practice safe driving and ensuring that they know how to respond if an unsafe situation arises. We are thankful that no one was seriously injured in this particular incident.”

Bushong was responsible for paying the co-pay for his hospital visit. Crawley was given a citation for failure to yield while turning left.
