Pilot dead after plane crashes into Cobb home

UPDATE: We’ve learned that the plane was flying from Cincinatti, Ohio, not from Delaware as originally reported. This information comes from the Aviation Safety Network.

ORIGINAL STORY: A twin-engine plane crashed in the front yard of a house off Bells Ferry Road in Cobb County around 7 p.m. Friday evening, leaving the pilot dead.

The plane, a Cessna Citation I, was flying from Delaware to Fulton County Airport, according to a spokeswoman for the Cobb County Fire Department. The pilot was found dead inside the plane when first responders arrived on the scene.

“It was like a movie,” said Laura McInerny, a neighbor who witnessed the crash. “It dropped straight out of the sky, and it sort of twisted as it came down.”

Mclnerny’s husband, Ron Jones, said he tried to help after he saw the crash.

“I ran over and hooked the hose up to the house and started spraying the lawn down,” Jones said.

No one inside the house was injured. Officials said the residents weren’t home at the time of the incident.

The fire department doused the initial flames, but the fire rekindled around 9 p.m. and was extinguished again.

Vistawood Lane NE is blocked off as of 10:30 p.m., along with parts of Vistawood Drive NE.

The Sentinel will continue to update as we learn more details.
