Alabama A&M gets served

In straight sets, the men’s and women’s tennis teams defeated Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University on Saturday, March 11 at the Betty Siegel Courts.

Senior Sam Slade, sophomore Fermin Calvo Barcelo and freshman Drew Lahey all won their singles matches in straight sets to complete the 7-0 sweep.

After the Owls clinched the doubles point, freshmen Harrison Wood and Miller Durham quickly put away their single matches at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1) and No. 6 (6-1, 6-1), while senior David Durham won No. 3 clinching Kennesaw State University’s third-straight victory.

The men’s team improved to 7-5 overall and has won seven of its last nine matches.

“It was good to see different faces playing well and representing,” said Tennis Director Eduardo Rincon.

The women’s match was clinched by Aspen Jarrett at No. 6, as the freshman knocked off Jazmine Lawson, 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets.

Junior Kennedy Craig got things rolling in the singles play, beating Sharre Smith 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Junior Cristina Perez-Martin finished her match at No. 2 over Beatriz Cerezo, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Jada Tijani followed at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alyssa Williams.

Junior Alexandra Mercado won in singles for the fifth time this spring as she beat Virag Hollos, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Laura Hopton was leading at No. 3 6-2, 3-2 before the rain shower made the courts unplayable.

“We had to overcome another day of tough weather conditions, but I’m proud of how we competed,” said assistant head coach Miranda Foley. “We’re continuing to improve as the conference season gets closer.”

The men’s team will return to the courts Saturday against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, while the women’s team has a week off before hosting Western Carolina at the Betty Siegel Courts at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18.
