Fresh off its first win of the season over Belmont University, the Kennesaw State men’s tennis team dropped a closely-contested match to South Carolina’s Wofford University on Saturday, losing 4-3.
The Owls posted some strong performances against the Terriers, but the team couldn’t get the momentum needed to win. The loss dropped Kennesaw to 1-4 on the season while Wofford improved to 6-3.
The doubles teams continued to shine for KSU, posting two wins over the weekend. The duo team, senior Simon Pritchard and sophomore Lucas de Torres Curth, posted a win in No. 1 doubles competition for the fourth consecutive match. Seniors David Durham and Sam Slade also contributed to the Owls’ doubles success by cruising to an easy victory in No. 3 doubles action by a score of 6-0.
Propelled by early wins in the doubles competition, Kennesaw continued to succeed in the singles division as junior Manuel Castellanos defeated Belmont’s Peter Coombs in straight sets by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Senior Drew Wendel also came out on top in his singles match over the Terriers’ Kyle Barr, 6-3, 6-3.
The early doubles and singles victories got Kennesaw off to an outstanding start as it began the meet with a 3-0 lead, but the celebration was short-lived as Wofford dominated the remainder of the matches.
The Terriers came storming back with victories in No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the singles matches. All came down to the final set, but the Owls fell short in each one. The four consecutive singles victories pulled Wofford past Kennesaw by a final score of 4-3, continuing the Terriers’ undefeated winning streak.
Both the men’s and women’s team will continue their schedule on Saturday, Feb. 18, as they host Alabama State University at 2 p.m.
