SGA meeting talks Olens appointment, dance marathon

The Student Government Association voted on a resolution concerning the appointment of the new president and KSU Miracle promoted their Dance Marathon at the general body meeting Wednesday Oct. 6.

Olens Candidacy

The possible appointment of Sam Olens sparked many student protests in the last few weeks as the school board continues to recognize him as the main candidate for Kennesaw State’s new President. The resolution calls for an “equal-opportunity search for the Presidency of Kennesaw State University.”

Students were sent an email by the Chancellor noting his proposal for continuing to have Sam Olens as the KSU President.

“Over the past few weeks, much has been said about what Mr. Olens believes, his motivation and his experience for serving as the president of a university. By sharing a copy of the letter he sent to me, I hope it will provide you with a better sense of who Sam Olens is and why he wants to be the next president of Kennesaw State,” Hank Huckaby wrote in the email.

Sam Olens was appointed president of KSU on Oct. 12 and his tenure will start Nov. 1. The unanimous vote selected him as the fourth leader of KSU, despite the concerns the Board of Regents received from students, faculty, staff and alumni.

KSU Miracle

The KSU Miracle spoke at the meeting to discuss its event that is held in the Spring semester. The goal is to double the funds made last year and raise $150,000 this year for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

“At the end of the day this Dance Marathon isn’t just about the money that we’re raising,” Connor Weaver, campus relations director for KSU Miracle said. “It’s about these kids in our local community who are going through so much and us as a campus getting together to be this positive influence behind them.”

The Dance Marathon will take place on March 25 in the Rec Center located on the Kennesaw campus.

“You get to run around with these kids who weren’t supposed to be able to walk and you get to scream and shout with these kids that weren’t supposed to talk, and the magic behind that is life changing,” Weaver said.

The next general body SGA meeting will be Oct.19 in the UV rooms at the Kennesaw Campus at 7 p.m. All students are invited to attend.
