Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority promotes empowerment and self-love

The Pi Phi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hosted an empowering event, “I Am Imperfectly Pearlfect,” on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Marietta campus.

“We just expressed the importance of having self-love and understanding valuing yourself, and taking out some time to care for yourself,” said Mariah Williams, a senior communication major and the president of the Pi Phi chapter of AKA.

Williams, along with chapter member Lexus White, kicked off the event by introducing themselves and passing out small pieces of paper. They instructed the attendees to write down things they did not like about themselves.

Then, White collected all of the papers and threw them away. The attendees were told to forget everything that they wrote down because they were going to focus on positivity that day.

Tallia Barnette, a senior early childhood education major and member of AKA, took the floor and spoke to the group about the best ways to relax and take care of themselves. Members of the audience discussed daily and weekly routines they partake in to make sure they do not become too overwhelmed.

“Most importantly, at the end of the day [we have to] make sure that we get to a place where we can love ourselves honestly and truly,” said Ludny Saintine, a junior biology major. “Really just appreciate who we are as people, no matter the influences we have around us.”

Closing out the event, the members of AKA passed out thank you cards for the attendees to write a note to themselves, showing appreciation and self-love.

The women of the Pi Phi chapter of AKA encouraged the young women in their audience to believe in their self-worth and love themselves.

“I think before you can have a relationship with someone else you have to have a relationship with yourself,” Williams said. “Before you can love anyone or understand happiness, you must know how to make yourself happy.”
