Chancellor Hank Huckabee confirmed Monday that Georgia’s Attorney General Sam Olens is being considered for the position of president of Kennesaw State University. Students protested the appointment on The Green Monday, Oct. 3, after hearing rumors that he was being considered for president. Some students were concerned about Olen’s history with LBGTIQ community and his comments about marriage equality. The Sentinel attended the protest and asked students to share their opinions on this issue.
“I don’t like the fact [that Olens is being considered for president] because KSU has a big LBGTIQ community. So if he’s gonna be anti against it — is what I’ve read on it, then he shouldn’t be president because if you’re not going to support everyone in the community then why are you president of a whole campus?”
“I don’t really care about the president here. I’m just here to go to school and get my degree. I’m sure it’s something that does affect me, but I don’t feel like it really directly affects me. But I can definitely see where it’s concerning to students.”
“I find it appalling that someone with his history would be placed at the head of an institution, which claims itself to be inclusive, to be a global institution and to be accepting of different groups. I find it disturbing that this is what is necessary for the students and the faculty of this institution to actually have their voices heard.”
“It’s not really to say that he’ll cut all those programs. He can believe one thing personally and still advocate for the student, but students should still feel safe.”
