The Board of Regents will vote on Oct. 12 on whether or not Attorney General Sam Olens should be appointed the next president of Kennesaw State University.
In an email sent to the KSU community, Chancellor Hank Huckaby explained that Olens was interviewed Tuesday by a Board of Regent committee.
“[The committee] passed a motion to recommend that the full Board consider and vote on Mr. Olens for the position of president of Kennesaw State University,” Huckaby said in the email.
Huckaby called it “probably one of the best interviews” he’s seen, according to NPR.
“Mr. Olens spoke passionately about the role of higher education, his experience as a leader, and his vision for taking Kennesaw State University to the next level,” Huckaby said.
The chancellor also attached a letter from Olens, requesting to be considered for the position as KSU’s president.
“Over the past few weeks, much has been said about what Mr. Olens believes, his motivation and his experience for serving as the president of a university,” Huckaby said. “By sharing a copy of the letter he sent to me, I hope it will provide you with a better sense of who Sam Olens is and why he wants to be the next president of Kennesaw State.”
In this letter, Olens outlined his plans for the university, explaining that one of his “top priorities will be to keep tuition and fees as low as possible.” He also mentions securing access to financial aid.
Students have publicly protested the appointment of Olens, and a petition has gained more than 6,800 signatures in opposition.
Huckaby asked students and faculty to “keep an open mind” throughout the process.
