Multicultural Greek Council welcomes students with picnic on The Green

The Multicultural Greek Council sororities and fraternities welcomed students with a picnic on The Green on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The council emerged in the 1970s, bringing a twist to traditional sororities and fraternities. The council wanted to send a different message by being inclusive and allowing all people from different backgrounds to be apart of the organization. Here at Kennesaw State University, it lives up to what the founders wanted.

“We don’t stick with one ethnic group,” said Ben Torres, a graduate student and former president of Phi Iota Alpha. “Even though we are Latino centered, we have brothers from all sorts of backgrounds be it black, gay, transgender, Asian we are very multicultural.”

The three organizations that make up the council here at KSU include sorority Lambda Theta Alpha and fraternities Lambda Theta Phi and Phi Iota Alpha.

“We are having a Multicultural Greek Council picnic, and that’s the entire council for all of the multicultural organizations we have here on campus,” Torres said.

The three council organizations welcomed everyone on campus to dine with them on Wednesday. Chicken, pinto beans and rice were some of the items on the menu for the day. The menu also featured horchata, a traditional Mexican drink made with cinnamon and rice.

Students who attended the picnic could also take part in a tug-of-war competition, or watch as two at a time battled it out on the large inflatable.

“We are all here to celebrate Greek unity and welcome everyone in for the new semester,” Torres said.
