“John Dies at the End” Review

With its humor, fantasy-like content and horror aspect, this film is like “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Odd Thomas” fused together. If you like that genre, then this movie is for you.

The film centers around a new drug — dubbed “soy sauce” — that changes the lives of its users. The main characters, Dave and John, are a couple of drifters who acquire the drug at a party one night. The two of them, along with other users, experience paranormal activity and the ability to time travel to other dimensions.

The first five minutes of the film come out guns blazing with axes and bloody body parts everywhere. The excessive gore grabs the viewers attention, but the film goes completely downhill from there. While the plot sounds like it should be entertaining, it failed to meet my relatively low expectations. It could have been executed much better if the writers had skipped a few cheap gags in exchange for something more meaningful. The special effects are the only aspect of the film that deserve any kind of recognition.

The only notable name in this movie is actor Paul Giamatti, whose role isn’t anything big and disappoints considering his previous roles in films such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “12 Years a Slave.”

My experience viewing this film is one that I’d like to forget. From beginning to end, the movie was confusing and hard to follow. I kept looking at the clock wondering when it would come to an end.
