“John Dies at the End” is blend of gore, science fiction, comedy and fantasy. As intriguing as that mixture may sound, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly waiting for the movie to finally be over.
The plot centers around two best friends and college dropouts, David and John, and “soy sauce.” The potent drug causes insane hallucinations but, more importantly, allows users to travel through time and across dimensions. The fate of humanity rests in David and John’s hands as they battle forces of evil while dabbling in the soy sauce along the way. The duo could be considered a modern day, twisted “Men in Black.”
As impressive as the plot may sound, the execution was poor, leaving me with more and more questions with each passing second. Nearly every event felt rushed and left me pondering how exactly one event could possibly have lead to the next.
The humor was mediocre at best. The attempts of sexually fueled jokes were sometimes cringe worthy. As far as the execution of the gore, science fiction and fantasy genres, it was pretty spot on.
The movie is an on-screen adaptation of a book of the same title, which I assume would answer many of my questions. Despite my negative viewing experience, both the movie and book have been dubbed cult classics.
For anyone who is interested in a watching “John Dies at the End,” I highly suggest taking notes along the way to keep up.
