Zuckerman Exhibition explores American landscape painting, conservation, control over land

A View Beyond the Trees and Punc’t open June 18

(From News Releases) Join the Zuckerman Museum of Art for an exploration of how landscapes represent spaces of possibility in A View Beyond the Trees, an exhibition featuring the work of three contemporary artists and selections from the ZMA’s permanent collection.

As part of A View Beyond the Trees, guest curator and Kennesaw State professor of art Daniel E. Sachs presents five American landscape paintings from the ZMA permanent collection in exploration of two of the 19th-century American public’s favorite subjects for paintings: mountains and the seacoast.

A View Beyond the Trees challenges visitors to examine the legacy of American landscape painting and the related histories of conservation, power and control over land, and landscapes as a stage upon which events unfold. The exhibition features exploratory and site-specific work by contemporary artists Dawn Holder, Joe Hamilton, and Stacy Lynn Waddell. The opening reception features a performance by classical guitar duo Mary Akerman and Jackson Brischler, and Rodney Clemons of Allgood Bonsai will be onsite for a bonsai demonstration presented in partnership with Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

The Zuckerman Museum of Art will also celebrate Punc’t in the Fine Arts Satellite Gallery and a new installation by Jim Waters on the ZMA Stairway Wall. Punc’t, coordinated by Neenah Paper, is an exhibition that explores design through punctuation and features twenty-four of the most sought after contemporary designers in New York City. Jim Waters’ Untitled, an installation on the ZMA Stairway Wall, explores perception through light and color. Materials such as glitter, resin and holographic vinyl amplify the symbolic potential of the form and activate the wall and environment they inhabit.

Punc’t is an exhibition of limited edition posters by 24 of the most highly sought after designers from New York City. Each poster features different punctuation marks as the primary driver behind the imagery. In a world of rapid text messaging and emoticons, the topic of punctuation is perhaps even more relevant today than when the exhibition was first developed in 2004. Punc’t was originally produced by Neenah Paper to raise funds for the Books for Kids Foundation.
