The Commons was evacuated this Tuesday morning due to what was perceived to be a small kitchen fire. All the students were vacated from the premises and the fire department showed up soon after. Robert Nolen, Meal Plan Manager at The Commons, says that it “actually wasn’t a fire. Something set off the system but anytime the system or the sprinklers go off the fire department comes in.”

Nolen claimed the facility would be up and running again roughly an hour from the evacuation time. Despite the quick turnaround Nolen described, many students were inconvenienced by the shutdown.

Freshman English major Jasmine Sandhu said her and her friends “couldn’t figure out what to do with such a short amount of time. It’s [their] only break”. For the time being, most of the other vendors on campus will be taking swipes.

UPDATE: The Commons distributed free food at the front door to hungry students that were affected by the temporary closing.
