There is something about the childhood memories that attracts our attention, which is why the majority of us loved the ‘90s.
With Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski on “Saved by the Bell,” the start of the “American Pie” phenomenon, some of the first cell phones, the World Wide Web and of course bands like Third Eye Blind, Nirvana and the Goo Goo Dolls, the ‘90s were rich in culture.
Recently, the ‘90s have come back in full swing. However, some students are not as crazy as others about the return of the culture.
“I mean, it’s kind of neutral I guess. I don’t really have any feelings about it,” said freshman Ben Blanks.
Even if you were previously unaware of the ‘90s creeping it’s way back in to today’s culture, there are plenty of ways to satisfy a hankering for a ‘90s pop song, movie, or television show.
Locally, the Star 94 radio station airs some favorites from the ‘90s during its weekly “Big ‘90s Weekend.”
Listeners can catch hits from Sugar Ray to the Backstreet Boys, as well as many others every weekend. For some, it’s a nice change from current music.
“It’s better than dub-step,” said sophomore Matt Neary.
If you grew up drooling over the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block, or just wanted to be them, the two popular boy bands just finished a tour in Dec. 2011.
There are recent rumors that S Club 7, the British pop-band and stars of the 1999 television show, “S Club 7 in Miami,” will be reuniting this summer for a tour across the UK and a possible record deal.
American Pie Fans will enjoy seeing, Jim, Michelle, Kevin, Vicky, Oz, and the rest of the gang return to East Great Falls for their high school reunion in the film, “American Reunion.” The film was released in theaters on April 6.
For ‘90s television fans, a few channels recently brought back some classic 90s favorites. “Nick at Nite,” Nickelodeon’s nightly cable network, plays reruns of family-friendly classics like “Family Matters,” “Friends,” “Home Improvement,” and “The Nanny.”
“Nick at Nite” currently airs Sunday through Thursday 8p.m. to 7a.m., Friday 9p.m. to 6a.m. and Saturday 10p.m. to 6a.m.
“The ‘90s Are All That,” another product of Nickelodeon, plays shows like “All That” and “Kenan and Kel” on TeenNick every night beginning at midnight.
No matter how you feel about the decade, there are constant reminders in today’s media that continues to take us down memory lane and remind us why we loved the ‘90s.
