KSU’s women’s softball team used a 7-2 victory in the second game of a double-header on Saturday to split a two-game series with USC Upstate (28-6, 2-2 A-Sun) in Spartanburg, S.C., and finish its conference road trip with a 3-1 record.
The Owls struggled in the first game on Saturday, producing just one run in a 1-0 shutout.
With the split against the Spartans, the Owls are now 19-17 and 4-2 in the conference.
“While we’re certainly not satisfied and we have a lot of work to do, we are very happy to be able to go on the road and take three of four on the road in conference play,” said head coach Scott Whitlock.
Whitlock earned his 1,100th victory during the team’s series in Johnson City, TN., against East Tennessee State.
KSU was able to pull away in game two against the Spartans on Saturday in the fourth inning. With the score at 3-2, Jessica Cross hit her first of two home runs in the game.
Bianca Durant also hit a home run in the sixth inning to help the Owls blast away the Spartans.
The Owls will take a break from conference play on Wednesday when they host Georgia Tech in the fifth annual Lexi’s night.
Lexi’s Night, an event that helps raise money for the Alexis Kaiser Foundation involving Cerebral Palsy, began in 2010.
“I discovered little Lexi Kaiser because I am good friends with her father, Chip Kaiser, and subsequently became good friends with the entire family,” said coach Whitlock.
Student athletes from all of KSU’s varsity sports will help in executing the event. $10 donations will go to the foundation, while a meal from the Marietta Fish Market will be provided to donors.
“Every year it’s a special game, but this year it’s even more special because it’s Georgia Tech,” said Kaiser. “It’s just a good time and it’s a fun day.”
Georgia Tech defeated KSU, 9-1, in Atlanta earlier this year.
