Nagy Earns A-Sun Honors Again after Record Breaking Performance

KSU senior golfer Matt Nagy has seen plenty of success during his tenure in a black and gold uniform, and he added another highlight on Wednesday after being named the Atlantic Sun Conference golfer of the week, following an impressive -6 performance at the Seminole Intercollegiate that included a final round stroke total of 63.

Nagy did not have a single bogey or over on the final day, and managed to sink six birdies.

63 now stands as the lowest single round score in KSU history. Nagy’s record-breaking round beat the previous record, tied by current teammate and fellow senior, Jeff Karlsson, in the opening round on Friday.

“I knew I was running out of time here at KSU to set the record,” said Nagy. “After Jeff tied the record with his opening round of 65, I was motivated.”

Karlsson finished the first day on top of the leader board, but shot a 70 and a 74 in the final two rounds.

Freshman Jimmy Beck nailed down his second top-15 finish of the season, finishing the tournament at -1.

Sophomore Kelby Burton shot a personal best 68 on the final day, finishing 32nd in the field.

Overall, the Owls were good enough to place 3rd in the Seminole Intercollegiate, bested by host school Florida State and in-state foe Georgia Tech. KSU already has two 1st place finishes on its resume’ for the season.

The Owls finished first at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in October.

KSU would start slower in the Spring, finishing with a final score of +60 at the Gator Invitational in early February.

This weekend’s tournament was the first time this season that the Owls finished with a combined score that was under par. The previous best total for the Owls was a score of +15, set in the season opener in September at the Carpet Capital Collegiate tournament.

“Word’s cannot describe how proud of the team I am,” said head coach Jay Moseley. “Any time you can break records it is a great day for your program. We showed what we are capable of today and we will use the momentum to carry us through the rest of spring.”

The Owls have three more tournaments, including one this weekend in Sarasota, FL., on the schedule before the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament on April 16-18.

KSU is defending its Atlantic Sun Championship title from last year, headed by leaders Nagy and Karlsson. Moseley was named Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Coach of the Year last year in the wake of the Owls’ title.
