The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Kennesaw State is seeking student diversity ambassadors for the 2020-21 school year, with applications now open for students who qualify.
The mission for the ODI is to create an environment that encourages diversity of experience and backgrounds among students — however, the office has experienced a lack of student involvement in their ongoing mission at KSU, ODI Diversity Specialist Erica Brown said.
“When Dr. Carey-Butler began her tenure at KSU in July 2019 as the Chief Diversity Officer, she saw the need for our office to have more student involvement in our work,” Brown said.
As part of this initiative, the ODI has created 12 student diversity ambassador positions that will serve on both campuses starting the Fall 2020 semester. Each student will receive a financial stipend for each semester they serve as an ambassador.
Brown said she believes that student ambassadors will be capable of addressing many issues that impact the campus climate at KSU. All student ambassadors will be trained to engage with a plethora of situations, Brown said.
The ODI describes the purpose of student ambassadors and what they plan to achieve with them.
“These students will serve as an extension of the ODI, helping to advance our mission through programming and leadership development,” Brown said. “As an ambassador, students will have the opportunity to innovate, collaborate and become an important go-to resource and a voice for inclusion on campus.”
Some responsibilities of the ambassadors include attending general meetings and training as well as serving on different committees to help develop student diversity programs, Brown said.
Brown also stated that student ambassadors will have “endless” opportunities after working with the ODI.
“As a student ambassador, you will be given opportunities to network with many constituents on and off-campus,” Brown said. “Our hope is the knowledge and skills developed through the program will equip the ambassadors with skills that will serve them long after they have graduated from KSU.”
Any full-time student with at least a 3.0 GPA is eligible to apply. The application deadline is Monday, Feb. 13. Each applicant will be included in an interview process with a review committee selected by the ODI, Brown said. Selected applicants will then be notified by Wednesday, April 1.
