“Destiny” does not work at KSU, and no, it’s not your fault

College students living on campus around the world are having issues connecting to and playing the newly released video game, “Destiny.”  “Destiny” is perhaps the biggest game launch of the year so far, and hundreds of thousands of players are now unable to access the online-only game due to an error code known as “centipede.”

Initially, the problem was only being discussed on the game’s official forums; and there was even an official KSU Centipede Error forum thread before the issue was found at other schools around the world.  Now the problem has grown so big there that is a twitter movement involving tweeting #fixcentipede.

This has been a prevailing issue for two days now, and shockingly, developer Bungie, who is well known for their community support, has done very little to acknowledge and address the error.  Bungie posted a supposed fix on their help page, which required certain ports to be opened in a router’s settings. For anyone living on campus here at KSU, that simply is not a possibility, as students are not able to open ports within the KSU internet settings.

Some users believe the problem arises due to campus internet blocking peer-to-peer connections, with the intention of blocking illegal torrenting programs.  But now this would also block the perfectly legal video game Destiny, which relies on a type of peer-to-peer connection.

The Sentinel reached out to KSU’s housing IT department and got this statement back:

“We have had several complaints regarding the game Destiny but please do not fret. The issue does not rely on our network, but with the programming of the game created by Bungie.

Please refer to Bungie’s PSA for the Centipede bug: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/66486580/0/0

KSU Housing does not block any ports, such as,
Destiny Port Range
Direction
7500-17899 (TCP)
Outbound
30000-40399 (TCP)
Outbound
35000-35099 (UDP)
Inbound and Outbound
3074 (UDP)
Inbound and Outbound

Bungie has not properly coded, nor fixed the long reported centipede bug for the game to work in a school environment.
They should be working on a timely fix for this issue and I would advise directing complaints to their forums, as every other game on Xbox Live and Playstation Network has been programmed to work in school environments.

If you have any other issues with your network connectivity please let us know.”

This statement indicates that there is nothing on KSU’s end that is blocking connections within the game. So for now, there is nothing you or KSU IT can do to alleviate the problem, it is simply on the developer to come up with a fix to their problem.

  1. for the destiny ports do you have to type it in as- start port 7500 and end port 17899 or do you type it in as- start port 7500-17899 and end port 7500-17899? I’m new to this port forwarding so i don’t understand it quite well.
