Down 17-14 late in the fourth quarter Saturday night at Centennial Bank Stadium, Kennesaw State football had a chance to tie the game at 17.
Kicker Daniel Kinney lined up for the field goal try, but missed it from 32 yards out for his first miss of the season and only the second of his career.
With just under three minutes left in the game after the miss, Arkansas State was able to run the clock out and secure its victory.
In a low-scoring defensive battle, the first touchdown of the night came when quarterback Trey Owens threw a touchdown pass to receiver Hunter Summers from 14 yards out to give the Red Wolves a 7-0 lead with just under five minutes to go in the first half.
The Owls answered a few minutes later when running back Boogie Woods III ran in an eight-yard touchdown for the first of his two trips to the end zone.
The run capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive and tied the game heading into halftime.
After a big stop on defense to begin the second half, KSU went on a 14-play drive which took nearly six minutes off the clock and ended with a six-yard touchdown run from Woods III to take a 14-7 lead, its last of the night.
A-State quickly answered, and tied the game again on a two-yard rush from Owens.
Kicker Clune Van Andel put the Red Wolves back in front at the midway point of the fourth quarter, a lead they never waived.
Owls quarterback Rickie Collins finished with 129 passing yards on 17 completions, and also added 52 yards rushing.
Despite the result, Saturday was a night to remember for Woods III. He rushed for a career high 101 yards, and added 20 yards receiving.
With the loss, KSU now sits at 1-3 through the non-conference schedule and are entering its bye week before conference play begins.
The Owls conference opener will be a midweek matchup against Jacksonville State on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium.
