ATLANTA — The city of Atlanta was turned into a global soccer hub for the 2026 World Cup.
Thirty years after the Olympic Games in 1996, Atlanta proved once again why it is an outstanding city to host big sporting events as a host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Inside Atlanta Stadium and the FIFA Fan Festival in Atlanta, the chants from fans never stopped. Flags were waved high in the air and fans embraced as if they’ve known each other for years. For nearly a month, Atlanta transformed into a global soccer city, bringing fans from all over the world to celebrate the biggest tournament in all of sports.
With more than one million visitors attending stadium matches and Fan Festivals from the city, Atlanta became one of the biggest stages for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Centennial Olympic Park alone held the biggest FIFA Fan Festival in America as they drew over 500,000 attendees throughout the entirety of the tournament.
“I was skeptical at first, but the atmosphere ended up being amazing,” said University of Miami student, Carson Brooke, who attended the Fan Fest in Miami. “The energy—especially from Brazil fans—was something I didn’t expect.”
Brooke described the World Cup as more than a sporting event, saying it is something deeply personal for him.
“The World Cup is something I attach a lot of emotion to every four years,” he said. “It’s one of the only times I really feel pride in my country. It means a lot.”
Atlanta hosted eight matches inside the Mercedes Benz Stadium which was known as Atlanta Stadium during the World Cup.
Included in this year’s tournament are matches and moments that will be tied with Atlanta forever:
– Social media sensations Cabo Verde earn their first World Cup points ever against Spain.
– Spain vs. Saudi Arabia featured Lamine Yamal scoring his first-ever World Cup goal.
– Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina staged a late 3-2 comeback against Egypt after trailing 2-0.
– England faced Argentina in the World Cup semifinal with millions watching around the world.
– Spain later won World Cup, winning against Argentina, with England placing third. All of them ended up playing in Atlanta.
Passion from multiple countries was carried throughout the entire city of Atlanta. Transit systems had an increase of ridership as fans went to the Fan Festival, Atlanta Stadium, and popular bars around the city.
Despite the differences seen in social media between different countries, the World Cup tournament created a sense of unity and belonging to the fans.
“It’s a way to show that despite everything going on in the world, people can come together through love, acceptance and culture,” Brooke said.
Atlanta’s role as a host city in the 2026 World Cup will forever be recognized for the electric environment and magic created. The city left with multiple records to its name.
People will look back at all the memories that bring them back to a summer of love, passion, and heartbreak all in one. The FIFA World Cup has become more than just a tournament. It became a once in a lifetime experience.
