The Owls Conclude their Final Tune Up of the Season

KSU’s men’s and women’s track team competed in the Tiger Track Classic over the weekend, in preparation for the 2012 Atlantic Sun Track and Field Championships.

The two-day event took place at Auburn University.  Competition began on Friday and ended on Saturday.

The distance runners for the men had a great amount of success over the weekend, as two Owls placed in the top fifteen for the 3000m steeplechase.

Ryan Burruss placed fifth overall with a time of 9:16.777, while teammate Josh Jenkins placed 12th at 9:48.34.

Nabil Hamid finished in ninth place in the 3,000 meter with a time of 8:29.84 and posted a 12th place finish in the 1,500m with a time of 4:00.02.  Teammate Zach Tupper finished 17th in the 1,500m, just behind Hamid, with a time of 4:01.12.

In the 110m hurdles, Kendall Parks impressed with a fifth place finish and a time of 13.97 seconds.  Parks also placed 22nd in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.00 seconds.

In the men’s field events, Andre Dorsey grabbed two fifth place finishes in both the high jump and the long jump.  He posted scores of 2.02 and 7.09 meters, respectively.

Hendrik Themas placed sixth in the pole vault.  He reached 4.60 meters, while Tyler Riberdy had a 12th place performance in the triple jump with a score of 13.71 meters.

The women had a successful weekend as well, as Christie Leverette and Rebekah Roop posted the top finish for the team with a third and fourth place jump of 1.65 meters in the high jump.  Naomi Mack posted a score of 5.52 meters in the long jump, finishing 11th.  LaShanna Barchue leaped 5.49 meters to finish in 14th place.

Brittany Robinson recorded a top-10 performance in the 800m.  She ran to a sixth place finish with a time of 2.10.31.

The team’s throwers traveled to neighboring Jacksonville State University to compete in the 2012 Gem of the Hills Invitational.

Tyler Crow had a tremendous showing, claiming the title in the hammer throw with a distance of 38.90 meters.  He also finished 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 13.11 meters, and 7th in the discus with 36.03 meters.

In the women’s shot put, Chelsea Wood recorded an 8th place finish with a throw of 11.36 meters, while teammate Joyce Smith finished 11th at 11.00 meters.

The Owls will attempt to make a title run when they compete in the A-Sun Outdoor Championship on April 20 and 21.

In 2011, the men’s team defeated Eastern Tennessee State University by 66 points to win their second consecutive outdoor title.  The women fell just short last year, finishing third.
