Soccer’s struggles continued during its opening road trip with shutout losses to Auburn and Georgia State
The road trip for the Owls began on Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex in Auburn, Alabama, where the Tigers defeated the Owls by a score of 6-0.
Auburn’s dominant performance was led by midfielder Erin Flurey, who scored four goals during the contest.
The first goal for Flurey was also the first goal for the Tigers, coming in the 15th minute on an assist by Jordan Crosby. Flurey scored again not even a minute later, giving Auburn a 2-0 lead.
In the 25th minute, the Tigers made the match 3-0 on Flurey’s third goal of the night, assisted by Tyler Clyburn.
Auburn scored once more before halftime in the 42nd minute on a goal from Shelby Salee, taking a 4-0 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers picked up right where they left off to start the second half, with Flurey scoring once again in the 49th minute, her fourth and final goal of the night, making the score a 5-0 Auburn lead.
Flurey’s four-goal performance on Sunday puts her just one goal short of last year’s season total, where she started all 18 games at Syracuse.
Auburn finished out the day’s scoring on an unassisted goal by Taylor Chism, giving the Tigers a 6-0 advantage.
The story of the match for the Owls was similar to their previous effort against Memphis, seeing the Owls failing to control possession and get opportunities for shots. Auburn had 28 shots on Sunday, while KSU had none over 90 minutes of play.
KSU traveled back to familiar soil to finish out the road trip, facing Georgia State at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday night.
The match saw chaos almost immediately, with GSU scoring on a KSU own goal, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
It was the only goal scored in the first half, but GSU scored in the first minute of the second half on a goal by Reese Gordon, assisted by Gabriela Gonzalez, to make the match 2-0 in favor of the Panthers.
GSU extended its lead to 3-0 moments later on a goal in the 52nd minute from Emily Glenn, assisted by Gordon. Glenn scored her second goal of the night in the 58th minute, this time assisted by Gonzalez, making the score 4-0 which is where it stayed for the remainder of the match.
The Owls had been unable to get the ball to the net and get shots off during the team’s first two matches, and this game was no exception. Once again, the Owls had no shots on compared to 23 by the Panthers. Thursday marked KSU’s third straight shutout to begin the season.
KSU has faced a very tough start to their non-conference schedule, beginning with a ranked Memphis squad, a Southeastern Conference opponent in Auburn, and a GSU team who now has a 3-1 record after Thursday night.
The Owls will return home on Sunday evening, facing North Florida at 6 p.m.
