After much speculation regarding the expiration of his previous contract, Kennesaw State has extended Director of Athletics Milton Overton through 2028.
AJ Howard of Hoot State, a KSIU athletics fan site first reported the extension on X on Wednesday with a capture of the fifth amendment to Overton’s contract acquired via open records request. The document has been verified by the Sentinel and the Marietta Daily Journal.
The extension period consists of three consecutive one-year terms beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of each year from 2025-2028. Each term is set to be renewed provided Overton fully complies with the terms and conditions of the agreement.
The agreement includes a raise for Overton, with his base annual salary increasing from $257,000 in 2024-25 to $301,300 in each of the contracted years.
Incentives for Overton include a payout amount equal to 7% of the athletic director’s base salary if all of KSU’s intercollegiate athletic teams achieve an Academic Progress Rate of 950 or if the university receives a revenue increase of $1 million.
Overton would also receive a $10,000 bonus if either KSU’s football, men’s basketball or women’s basketball wins its conference championship, provided there are no pending investigations via the NCAA or Conference USA.
Overton has been the athletic director since Dec. 2017. During his tenure, he has guided the university as it moved from the the ASUN Conference to Conference USA, and oversaw the football program’s move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
During that time he has also overseen the hiring of new coaches in three of the university’s full scholarship sports including two men’s basketball coaches — the late Amir Abdur-Rahim, and Antoine Pettway. Overton hired Octavia Blue as women’s basketball coach, and Jerry Mack, who will enter his first year as the new football coach this fall.
The agreement was reached following a period of confusion amongst supporters of KSU athletics caused by the expiration of Overton’s previous agreement on June 30 and the university’s lack of statement.
The deal was signed by all parties on July 14, implying Overton may have been working without a contract for two weeks.
.KSU has yet to put out a statement or release citing or celebrating the contract extension.
